When Pennsylvania competes, Pennsylvania wins.
Pennsylvania’s economy is the 6th largest in the country and the 18th largest in the world—with nearly 6 million Pennsylvanians going to work every day to support themselves, their families and our economy.
But, what most people do not realize is that in the Keystone State, it is still legal to fire someone from their job, deny housing or refuse service, just because they are gay or transgender. In fact, Pennsylvania is the only state in the Northeast without an inclusive nondiscrimination policy in law.
Today, a bipartisan coalition of Pennsylvania legislators, along with top business leaders officials from the education community and citizens, launched Pennsylvania Competes—an unprecedented grassroots campaign with one goal: to pass the Pennsylvania Fairness Act.
The Pennsylvania Fairness Act will update Pennsylvania’s Human Relations Act of 1955 to ensure that all citizens regardless of race, ancestry, age, sex, national origin, disability, and now—sexual orientation, gender identity and expression—can participate in the state’s economy.
Business leaders agree that a workplace free of discrimination supports growth and innovation. That’s why all 23 of the Fortune 500 companies based in Pennsylvania have nondiscrimination policies in place. And Pennsylvanians overwhelmingly agree, too—with 78% supporting an update to Pennsylvania’s nondiscrimination law.
Why? Because an inclusive Pennsylvania is a competitive Pennsylvania. We need to grow our economy by attracting top talent, particularly amongst a leading source of innovative skills, the millennial generation.
But if we’re going to win this year, we need you on board.
Let’s do this. Click here to join Pennsylvania Competes’ campaign if you’re ready to ensure nondiscrimination protections for LGBT Pennsylvanians.
